Remembrance at Sea | Ash Scattering
When it is time to commit a loved one’s ashes to the sea, Admiralty Sailing is dedicated to providing a comfortable, dignified and serene memorial service. Our boat is based in Marina del Rey and offers services in Santa Monica bay
Our 34 foot Beneteau Sailboat, Reliance, comfortably seats up to 6 adults and features a full galley, refrigerator and a private head.
What to Expect
We will meet you at the dock gate and help bring anything down to the boat and also provide access to a secure parking area. Once all are aboard, we will have a short safety briefing and get underway. It takes about an hour to motor from the dock to three miles offshore. (Although we are a sailboat, we will be under diesel engine power, motoring at 5-6 knots) Once there, the family can reflect on the departed and the ashes are scattered to the deep. Flowers are usually cast with the ashes as a final farewell. Then, the Captain will circle the area once or twice and record the Lat/Long coordinates for posterity. In about an hour, we are back at the dock.
When to Go
The seas are generally calm in the morning and we find that leaving the dock around 9am provides the best experience for the guests.

What if I need to reschedule?
Weather happens. Travel plans change. Schedules conflict. We get it. We are happy to reschedule any booked trip at no additional costs or penalty. Our flat rate is a flat rate. We just want to make this as easy as possible.

How do I book the ceremony and pay for the trip?
The best way is to call so we can talk about flowers, traditions, expectations and scheduling. If the trip is more than a week away, we will send a Paypal invoice for a 50% deposit to hold the date. (The balance is due the week of the trip or you can pay the full amount in advance. We use Paypal as an escrow account and the money stays there until the trip is completed).
How much is the service?
Our flat rate of $450 for up to 6 people includes complimentary water and soft drinks. There are no added or hidden fees.6 Passengers is our MAXIMUM per USCG regulations.
What paper work is required?
Generally, the ashes are in a plastic bag with a zip-tie inside of a hard plastic box. On top will be an envelope with a form inside. This is the “Application and Permit for Disposition of Human Remains”, or VS-9. In the bottom left corner of the form, (Box 16A), it should say “AT SEA OFF THE COAST OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY” and BOX 11 on the middle left should state, CREMATION/SEA. If it states something else, the VS-9 form should be exchanged for a correct form. Admiralty Sailing will take this form and fill out the Latitude/Longitude of the ash scattering and mail the original to the LA County Dept. of Public Health and send a copy to the charterer.
Admiralty Sailing’s Captain Stu Coleman is fully licensed to offer burials at sea by the State and Federal Government.
